Delighted that India won bid to host Centenary Commonwealth Games 2030: PM Narendra Modi

On November 26, the capital of India welcomed jubilant news: Prime Minister Narendra Modi issued heartfelt congratulations to the “people of India” after the nation was officially awarded the 2030 Commonwealth Games, with Ahmedabad named as the host city. The announcement came during the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) General Assembly held in Glasgow.

India’s successful bid firmly spotlights the country on the global sporting stage. Guided by the spirit of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam, the leadership looks forward to a spirited celebration of the Games and to welcoming athletes and visitors from every corner of the world, as Modi wrote on X.

Organisers for Ahmedabad 2030 will work closely with Commonwealth Sport and the relevant international federations to finalize a roster of 15–17 sports, following the latest Sport Programme Review. In addition to traditional disciplines, they are evaluating the inclusion of cricket T20, shooting, hockey, wrestling, judo, rugby sevens, 3×3 basketball, and possibly two new sports suggested by the host city.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah praised the Prime Minister for transforming the country into a prominent sporting destination. In a message on X, he cheered India’s victory: the country’s landmark bid to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games in Ahmedabad is a testament to PM Narendra Modi’s vision for elevating the nation’s sporting stature. He highlighted that, over more than a decade, Modi has built world‑class facilities and boosted India’s potential through strong governance and teamwork.

India’s track record at the Commonwealth Games is impressive. In 2010, the New Delhi edition yielded 101 medals, including 38 golds, with shooting alone contributing 30. The 2022 Games saw India capture 61 medals, 22 of which were gold; shooting was notably absent from that Birmingham edition.

Ahmedabad will become the second Indian city—and only the third in Asia—to stage the Commonwealth Games. The next Games are scheduled for Glasgow, Scotland, in 2026, following the 2022 edition in Birmingham.
