Dr. Mandaviya highlights the need to support cutting-edge research in anti-doping science

India Takes a Big Step Forward in Anti-Doping Science with New Chemical Standard

In a major boost for clean sports, Union Minister Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya launched an indigenous chemical standard called Methandienone Long-Term Metabolite (LTM) at the National Dope Testing Laboratory (NDTL) in New Delhi. This new reference material is vital for anti-doping tests and will help ensure athletes compete fairly, both in India and around the world.

Developed by NDTL in partnership with the National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research (NIPER) Guwahati, this chemical standard is a significant achievement for India’s anti-doping efforts. It highlights the country’s growing strength in sports science and research, aligning with the government’s goal of self-reliance under the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative.

What does this mean? The Methandienone LTM reference material will be shared with all laboratories authorized by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA). This sharing helps improve the accuracy and reliability of drug testing globally, promoting a clean and fair sports environment.

During the 22nd Governing Body meeting of NDTL, Minister Mandaviya also announced the latest edition of the laboratory’s newsletter. It details recent scientific developments, collaborations, and India’s expanding role in global anti-doping efforts.

The Minister discussed new policies aimed at encouraging research in doping detection. These grants will motivate universities, labs, and young researchers to work on projects like creating new reference materials, studying drug metabolism, and developing better testing methods.

He also reviewed progress on the Athlete Passport Management Unit (APMU), launched earlier this year at NDTL. The program helps track athletes’ biological data to detect doping. Dr. Mandaviya suggested expanding APMU activities to include athletes from neighboring countries, positioning India as a regional hub for this vital work.

Furthermore, a new awards framework was introduced to recognize top researchers and labs making significant contributions to doping control. These awards aim to foster innovation, integrity, and collaboration across the sports science community.

The launch of India’s own chemical reference material marks another milestone in strengthening the nation’s anti-doping infrastructure. It demonstrates India’s commitment to clean sports and transparent practices while showcasing its capabilities on the global stage.

This development is a proud moment for India’s sports science community and a step closer to ensuring fair play in athletics worldwide.
