Ex-NFLer fired as UCLA football coach three games into season

UCLA has parted ways with their head football coach DeShaun Foster after a tough start to the season. The Bruins announced the decision on Sunday, just days after a disappointing 0-3 record that saw them outscored 108-43 by opponents.
The final straw came in a home game blowout loss to New Mexico on Friday at Rose Bowl Stadium in Pasadena, California. Fans and the team hoped for better, but the struggles mounted quickly for the second-year coach.
Foster, a 45-year-old UCLA alum and former standout running back, had a solid NFL career spanning six seasons with the Carolina Panthers and San Francisco 49ers. He returned to his alma mater as running backs coach for six years under Jim L. Mora and Chip Kelly. When Kelly stepped down in 2024, Foster stepped up to lead the team, especially as UCLA prepared to join the competitive Big Ten conference.
Over two seasons, the UCLA Bruins football team posted a 5-10 record under Foster. Athletic director Martin Jarmond praised his dedication in a statement: “I want to extend my sincere appreciation to DeShaun for his contributions to UCLA Football over the years—first as a Hall of Fame student-athlete, then as an assistant coach, and finally as head coach. He took on this role at a challenging time and put his heart into moving the program forward. His legacy and love for this university are firmly established. He is a Bruin for life.”

To keep things moving, special assistant Tim Skipper steps in as interim head coach for the rest of the season. UCLA plans to launch a nationwide search right away to find their next head football coach.
Foster shared his thoughts in a heartfelt statement: “Serving as the head coach at UCLA, my beloved alma mater, has been the honor of a lifetime. While I am deeply disappointed that we couldn’t achieve the success our players, fans, and university deserve, I am grateful for the opportunity to lead this program. This chapter ends differently than I envisioned, but UCLA Football has a bright future. With its rich tradition and outstanding resources, the program will return to prominence. Once a Bruin, always a Bruin.”
UCLA football fans are buzzing about what’s next for the Bruins as they navigate this transition in the Big Ten era. Stay tuned for updates on the coaching search and upcoming games.
