After India’s dominant seven-wicket victory over Pakistan in the Asia Cup, captain Suryakumar Yadav opened up about the team’s bold choice to skip the traditional handshake. Speaking at the post-match press conference in Dubai, he said, “A few things in life come before sportsman spirit.” The decision hit headlines amid raw emotions from the tragic Pahalgam terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir, where 26 tourists lost their lives to Pakistan-sponsored terrorists on April 22.
Suryakumar led from the front, smashing an unbeaten 47 off 37 balls to guide India to a comfortable chase of Pakistan’s 128-run total in just 15.5 overs. The win felt extra special, and he dedicated it to the victims of the Pahalgam attack, their families, and India’s brave armed forces. “We stand with all the victims of the Pahalgam terror attack and their families. We express our solidarity,” he added. He also gave a shoutout to Operation Sindoor, saying the soldiers’ courage inspires the team, and they hope to return the favor on the field.
The match added another chapter to the fierce India-Pakistan cricket rivalry. For the eighth time in the last nine T20Is between the two sides, the team chasing won— the only outlier was last year’s T20 World Cup clash in New York. Kuldeep Yadav starred with his left-arm wrist spin, wrecking Pakistan’s batting lineup and earning Player of the Match honors. Suryakumar’s captain’s knock sealed a comprehensive win, exposing Pakistan’s struggles in batting, bowling, and fielding. Their skipper, Salman Ali Agha, skipped the post-match presentation after the heavy defeat.
Public outrage had been building over India even playing Pakistan in the Asia Cup, with many calling for a boycott due to the Pahalgam terror attack. Yet, the Indian team channeled that emotion into a strong performance, proving their unity and resolve on the cricket field.
