Finch explains how Gill will benefit from Rohit, Virat’s presence in maiden ODI captaincy assignment

Shubman Gill is set to take over as India’s new One‑Day International (ODI) captain, and former Australian skipper Aaron Finch says he believes the young player will settle into the role with ease. Finch, who lifted Australia to a T20 World Cup title, praised Gill’s confidence and said that having the veteran Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli on the field will help keep the team calm during the 2025 Australia series.

The decision to hand the captaincy to Gill came two years before the 2027 World Cup, when BCCI chief selector Ajit Agarkar told Rohit himself that he would be moved away from India’s top job. Rohit, who left the Test team in May, left the leadership baton for Gill, who has already captained in Tests and T20s. Gill led India to a 2‑2 draw in the Anderson‑Tendulkar Trophy against England, showing he can manage even without a senior guide.

Finch’s comments were made from Colombo, where the BCCI is hosting its Women’s World Cup coverage. “Shubman is a brilliant player and a natural leader, especially in white‑ball formats,” he said. “He has already shown he can head the team in Tests, and now in ODIs, the presence of Rohit and Kohli will give him valuable guidance and help him decide how the side plays.”

Gill will begin his ODI captaincy in Australia on 19 October, facing a series opener in Perth. With about 20 ODIs planned before the global event, the young captain’s target is the World Cup in South Africa. In a video posted by the BCCI, Gill said:

> “It’s an honour to lead my country. I hope we perform well. We have 20 ODIs before the World Cup, and that’s our ultimate goal.”

Gill leads a squad that includes Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, along with teammates Shreyas Iyer, Axar Patel, KL Rahul, Washington Sundar, Kuldeep Yadav, and others. The cricket world watches closely as the new Indian captain prepares to guide his side in the 2025 ODI series against Australia, hoping for success in both the tour and the future World Cup.
