India’s Fit India Sundays on Cycle kicked off its 41st edition with a fun twist, blending fitness, culture, and eco-friendly vibes to celebrate World Car Free Day 2025. The event landed just a day early on Sunday, September 22, turning streets across the country into hubs for cycling enthusiasts and families eager to pedal for a greener tomorrow.
In New Delhi, hundreds gathered at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium for an energizing cycling drive. School kids stole the show with a lively street play, or nukkad natak, highlighting how car-free days boost health and cut down on pollution. Their performance hammered home key points: fresher air, fewer emissions, and streets designed for people over cars. The whole scene wrapped up the spirit of World Car Free Day perfectly, drawing cheers from the crowd.
This edition also synced up with Hindi Pakhwara, a 14-day cultural fest running from September 14 to 29, organized by the Sports Authority of India’s Rajbhasha division. Partners like the Raahgiri Foundation and My Bikes helped make it happen, while fitness expert Shikha Gupta led a high-energy rope skipping session to keep everyone moving.
Top national cyclists Rahul Rana, Gaurav Kumar, and Priyanshu pedaled alongside participants, sharing tips on weaving cycling into everyday routines for better health and sustainability.
Over in Guwahati at the SAI National Centre of Excellence, the action teamed up with Incredible India from the Department of Tourism. The cycling rally paid heartfelt tribute to beloved Assamese music icon Zubeen Garg, who sadly died in a Singapore accident on Friday. Riders honored his legacy as Assam’s heartthrob with emotional moments that mixed mourning and motivation.
Since launching, Fit India Sundays on Cycle has exploded in popularity, drawing over 7.5 lakh people from more than 40,000 spots nationwide. The Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports runs it alongside the Cycling Federation of India, Yogasana Bharat, and MY Bharat. You’ll find these rides everywhere—from state capitals and union territories to SAI regional centers, National Centres of Excellence, training spots, Khelo India hubs, and beyond. It’s become one of India’s top campaigns for promoting cycling as a smart, sustainable fitness choice that lets you soak in the country’s stunning landscapes and heritage.
