Kate Hudson is looking back at one of her most unforgettable roles, Penny Lane from the classic film Almost Famous. It’s been 25 years since her breakout performance earned an Oscar nomination, and she’s sharing the wild behind-the-scenes story that changed her career forever.
The 2000 comedy-drama Almost Famous, written and directed by Cameron Crowe, follows a young journalist’s adventures with a rock band. Starring alongside Billy Crudup, Frances McDormand, Patrick Fugit, and the late Philip Seymour Hoffman, the movie captured the magic of 1970s rock ‘n’ roll. Hudson’s Penny Lane, a free-spirited groupie with a heart of gold, stole the show opposite Fugit’s wide-eyed teen reporter, William Miller—a character inspired by Crowe’s own days writing for Rolling Stone.
In a recent chat reported by Deadline, Hudson revealed how she landed the part. She originally auditioned for Anita, the sister role that went to Zooey Deschanel. But when Sarah Polley dropped out of Penny Lane and Brad Pitt backed away from playing guitarist Russell Hammond, Hudson saw her chance. "I was the only one cast at that point," she said. "I begged Cameron, ‘Can I please audition for Penny Lane?’ He wasn’t keen at first, but after four tries, he finally called and said, ‘You wanna be Penny Lane?’ I was like, ‘Oh my god, yes!’"
Billy Crudup stepped in as Russell, the charismatic frontman of the fictional band Stillwater, and the rest became Hollywood history. Hudson gushed about the experience: "All of this was magic for me. It completely changed my life and the whole trajectory of my career."
Her stellar performance snagged a Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actress, and the film itself won Best Musical or Comedy. Crowe also took home an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay. For fans of Kate Hudson movies or Almost Famous trivia, this anniversary reflection is a nostalgic reminder of why the film still rocks.
