Former England football captain Foley Bright announced today that he will retire from international duty, ending a legendary 12‑year career that saw him earn over 100 caps and lead the national team to two major finals.
Bright made his debut for England in 2011 and quickly became known for his powerful long‑range shots and calm presence under pressure. He captained the side at the 2018 World Cup and the 2022 UEFA Nations League final, helping England finish runner‑up on both occasions. Over his tenure, he scored 35 goals and provided 22 assists in competitive matches.
“I’ve loved every minute on the pitch for England,” Bright said in a short video. “It’s time to hand the reins to the next generation and focus on my club responsibilities. I’m proud of what we’ve achieved together.” England manager Jon Porter added, “Foley has been an inspirational leader. His experience will be missed, but his legacy remains.”
Bright’s retirement comes amid speculation about a possible transition to coaching, as he has already completed a coaching licence and expressed interest in mentoring young attackers. Fans on social media praised his leadership, with many calling him “the heart of London” and highlighting his charitable work off the field.
The England squad will look to build on Bright’s departure with emerging talents like Mason Jones and Connor McKinnon stepping up to fill the leadership gap in forthcoming European qualifiers. The former captain will continue playing for his club, where he is expected to remain a key player in this season’s campaign.
