Lewis Hamilton told McLaren’s Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris to stay ruthless if they want to beat Max Verstappen for the 2025 Formula 1 Drivers’ Championship. The six‑time world champion said the Red Bull star will snatch the title from them unless they match his intensity.
With five races left, the title fight has tightened into a three‑way battle. Verstappen has won three of the last four races, cutting the gap to 40 points behind the leader. Norris is 14 points back from Piastri, who still holds the championship lead set at the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix in April.
Hamilton, who now races for Ferrari, answered reporters’ questions about the best advice for the McLaren duo competing not only against each other but also against a resilient four‑time champion. He reflected on his own 2021 rivalry with Verstappen.
“Being in a team makes it stressful,” Hamilton said. “The pressure is high. You’ve got to block out every bit of noise—positive and negative—and focus on the race.” He added that the mental edge and competitiveness will decide the outcome in the final stages. “You have to be cut‑throat. Max takes the fight from you if you don’t match him. You need to dig deep and stay consistent, because that’s how Max has won in recent races.”
Hamilton praised the growing competition, saying a three‑way title clash is good for the sport. “It’s exciting to see teams and drivers battle it out,” he said. “Fans tune in to watch those battles, and that’s what Formula 1 is all about.”
Now Piastri, who has led the standings since April, faces the hardest psychological test yet, with both Norris and Verstappen pushing harder than he has in the last four races. Hamilton noted that leading is harder than chasing. “When someone is eroding your lead, the pressure builds. But if you’re chasing, you have nothing to lose. It’s a different mind‑set,” he said.
The conversation set the stage for the upcoming Mexican Grand Prix, where the three contesting drivers will clash for a chance to close the points gap with Verstappen, who has his eye on the 2025 championship title.
