Mercedes has confirmed that George Russell and Kimi Antonelli will drive its Formula 1 cars in 2026, right before the United States Grand Prix. The decision gives the team a clear, young front‑row as it eyes the big regulation changes coming next season.
Why Russell and Antonelli?
Both drivers rose through Mercedes’ junior program and proved they belong in the top team. Russell’s 2022 debut in the works cars turned into five race wins, the latest in Singapore, and he says he’s had his strongest season yet. Antonelli, 18, shocked the paddock when he became the youngest F1 podium finisher in Canada and has already earned a sprint pole in Miami. Their performances show they can compete, and Team Principal Toto Wolff said, “We want to make sure everyone was happy. I’m pleased we can keep the pair together.”
Looking ahead
Russell will celebrate his tenth year with Mercedes in 2026. He’s eager to ride the new cars and the sport’s biggest rule change yet. Antonelli is excited about the learning curve he’s already taken on and is looking forward to working alongside Russell for the rest of his rookie season.
What about the rest of the grid?
With Mercedes locked in, there are only four open seats left:
- Red Bull – Isack Hadjar is seen as a likely partner for Max Verstappen.
- Racing Bulls – Arvid Lindblad, an F2 star, could move into one of the two seats, leaving Yuki Tsunoda and Liam Lawson to fight for the third.
- Alpine – Franco Colapinto should stay on, with Pierre Gasly and reserve driver Paul Aron still in the mix.
Mercedes is now focused on finishing the final six races of 2025 strong and finishing second in the Constructors’ Championship before shifting its full attention to 2026. The announcement gives fans a clear picture of the team’s future while building excitement around the upcoming regulation overhaul that will reshape the sport.
