NFL Teams Honor Charlie Kirk with Moments of Silence After Tragic Assassination

Many NFL home teams paused for a heartfelt moment of silence on Sunday to remember Charlie Kirk, the 31-year-old conservative activist who lost his life in a shocking assassination. But not everyone joined in—teams like the Bengals, Lions, Colts, and Ravens skipped the tribute, as reported by the Daily Mail.

Kirk was speaking at an on-campus event at Utah Valley University on Wednesday when 22-year-old Tyler Robinson allegedly shot and killed him. Robinson now faces charges of aggravated murder. The news hit hard across the sports world, sparking tributes in stadiums nationwide.

During Sunday’s games, fans saw emotional displays from several teams. The Jets, Cardinals, Dolphins, Saints, Steelers, Titans, Chiefs, and Cowboys all held moments of silence right before kickoff. At the Titans’ game, they even showed a photo of Kirk on the giant scoreboard. The Cardinals paused before facing the Panthers, creating a somber start to the match.

It all started earlier in the week. The NFL organized a league-wide moment of silence before Thursday’s Packers-Commanders game at Lambeau Field. In a statement Friday, the league explained that individual teams would decide on tributes for the weekend slate.

“Last night’s moment was the league’s decision,” the NFL said. “It’s up to the clubs for this Sunday’s games. There have been a variety of moments of silence and tributes in-stadium and on-air in all games or a game immediately following events that rise to a national level. Clubs also often hold moments following a tragic event that affects their community.”

The league pointed to past examples, like moments after school shootings, the 2018 Tree of Life Synagogue attack in Pittsburgh, the October 2023 Hamas attack on Israel, and disasters such as major hurricanes and wildfires. These tributes show how sports unites people in tough times.

The Jets went a step further, displaying photos of Kirk with his wife and kids on the videoboard. Even outside football, the New York Yankees held a moment of silence before their Thursday game.

As the NFL season heats up, three more games are on deck this week. The Falcons host the Vikings on Sunday night, while the Buccaneers travel to the Texans and the Chargers head to Las Vegas to face the Raiders on Monday. Fans will watch if more teams honor Kirk amid the ongoing investigation into his assassination.

Stay tuned for updates on Charlie Kirk’s shooting and how the NFL responds to such national tragedies.
