Sunil Gavaskar says India’s top batters are set to thrive in tomorrow’s second ODI against Australia in Adelaide. The former captain, who has watched the side re‑brand into a confident unit, believes the 33‑year‑old stars will score big once they get a few more overs in the sun and a couple of hours on the nets.
Gavaskar’s praise comes after a shaky start on Perth’s bouncy pitch. Both Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma returned to international cricket after a seven‑month break, only to score a duck and eight runs respectively. Australia seized the opportunity, chasing the target with ease and winning by seven wickets to lead the three‑match series 1‑0.
“It was tough for anyone in Perth after a long lay‑off,” Gavaskar told India Today. “Even regulars like Shubman Gill and Shreyas Iyer found the bounce difficult. Kohli and Rohit need a bit of time to read it.”
The former captain is optimistic that the two will find their rhythm quickly. “Once they play, step into the nets, and feel the ball, they’ll be back in the flow in no time,” he added. “India’s still a strong side. Don’t be shocked if Rohit and Virat score big in the next two matches. Their runs will help us hit 300 or more.”
Adelaide offers an ideal backdrop for a turnaround. The venue is a favourite of Kohli’s, who has scored 244 runs in four ODIs at a 61‑run average and a pair of centuries. His Test record is even better, with 537 runs from five matches at a 53.70 average and three hundreds to his name. Germany thinks the bowler‑friendly surface will fit the attackers’ hand.
While Australia is hunting to halve the 1‑0 deficit, India will lean on their batting. With their batting experiencing a slump last week, the focus is on Kohli and Rohit finding their rhythm and taking advantage of a predictable pitch. With conditions like Adelaide Oval, a run-filled comeback looks plausible, if the players get the chance.
