Toronto’s Blue Jays clinched a berth in the World Series for the first time since 1993, riding a dramatic 4‑3 win over the Seattle Mariners in the American League Championship Series Game 7.
The win came on Monday night at Rogers Centre, where 44,770 fans saw George Springer drive home a three‑run homer in the seventh inning. Springer’s blast gave Toronto a 3‑1 lead that the Jays never relinquished.
Springer’s shot was the first go‑ahead homer in a Game 7 that came in the seventh inning or later. It also marked his 23rd postseason home run, tying him with Phillies legend Kyle Schwarber for third on the MLB postseason list.
“So happy for our team, our fans, our city, our country,” Springer said after the game. His performance has earned him a reputation as a clutch performer in the playoffs, especially after he helped lead the Jays to the ALCS title.
Blue Jays manager John Schneider praised the upper‑order hitters: “Bottom of our lineup still gets it done. There’s probably not another person on planet Earth that I want up other than George Springer and his October magic.”
The Blue Jays’ road to the championship was a comeback story. After dropping the first two games at home, Toronto erased the deficit, winning two games in Seattle, then the next two back at Rogers Centre. Their home record in the AL playoffs went 4‑2, and they finished the regular season 54‑27 at home.
Key contributors besides Springer included Vladimir Guerrero Jr., who won the ALCS MVP award, and Kevin Gausman, who pitched a scoreless inning of relief to earn the win. Chris Bassitt delivered a perfect eighth inning, and Jeff Hoffman closed the game for his second save of the postseason.
Seattle’s offense was led by Cal Raleigh, who hit a leadoff homer, and Julio Rodríguez, who also went deep. The Mariners went into the game up 3‑1 before the Jays turned the tables in the seventh.
With the AL pennant in hand, the Blue Jays will host the World Series Game 1 against the Los Angeles Dodgers on Friday night. Dodgers slugger Shohei Ohtani will face Toronto’s pitching staff as the defending champions swept Milwaukee in their National League Championship Series.
The World Series is the third time the series is being played in Canada, and Blue Jays chairman Edward Rogers said, “This is Canada’s team.” The Jays’ victory provides an inspirational moment for Canadians across the country as they watch their team chase the title on home turf.
