Giants vs. Chiefs: Preview, prediction, what to watch for in Week 3

Fans, get set for an exciting NFL Week 3 showdown between the New York Giants and the Kansas City Chiefs at MetLife Stadium on Sunday night. This matchup pits two powerhouse teams against each other, with star players ready to shine and key battles that could decide the game.

One of the biggest highlights? The showdown between Chiefs cornerback Trent McDuffie and Giants wide receiver Malik Nabers. McDuffie, a standout defender, earned first-team All-Pro honors in 2023 and second-team in 2024—he’s locked down top receivers all season. Nabers, meanwhile, exploded in Week 2 with nine catches for 167 yards and two touchdowns, leading the NFL with 238 receiving yards through two games. “He’s a very talented cornerback,” Nabers said. “I’ve been watching him since high school and in college at Washington. I respect all my opponents.” Expect these two to go head-to-head often, making for must-see action in this Giants-Chiefs clash.

When it comes to containing Patrick Mahomes, the Giants’ defense needs to stay glued to their assignments. Mahomes excels at turning broken plays into big gains, scrambling with his feet while scanning downfield for open receivers. “You’ve got to be disciplined, especially in the secondary,” Giants edge rusher Brian Burns noted. “Once he scrambles, eyes come off your man, and that’s when he hits you with a huge play.” The Chiefs’ wideouts thrive in these scramble drills, moving like they’re playing backyard football. Linebacker Bobby Okereke added that their receivers show great synergy, always on the same page with their quarterback.

Up front, the Giants’ center John Michael Schmitz faces a tough test against Chiefs defensive lineman Chris Jones, one of the league’s elite interior rushers. The Giants love Schmitz internally, but Pro Football Focus ranks him 32nd among starting centers after two weeks. Jones, much like the Giants’ own Dexter Lawrence, draws double-teams on nearly every snap, though he’s only notched four pressures so far. This battle in the trenches could swing the line of scrimmage in the NFL Week 3 matchup.

Speaking of the Giants’ offense, is what we’ve seen real or just a mirage? They struggled to score a touchdown in Week 1 but lit up the deep passing game in Week 2. The run game hasn’t clicked yet, and the offensive line looked shaky one week and solid the next. A big boost could come from left tackle Andrew Thomas, who’s set to return after foot surgery rehab. Can he handle a full workload right away? Rookie Marcus Mbow stepped up last week at left tackle, impressing while filling in for James Hudson III.

At running back, keep an eye on rookie Cam Skattebo—he might be on the verge of a breakout. The energetic newcomer scored a 1-yard rushing touchdown after a 24-yard run last week, earning praise from the coaching staff. Offensive coordinator Mike Kafka said, “He’s running hard, and that will give him more chances. He brings energy and enthusiasm that fires up the whole group.” Second-year back Tyrone Tracy Jr. hasn’t found his rhythm yet, so Skattebo could climb the depth chart in this Giants offense.

As for the prediction? The Giants have shown weaknesses against the run and struggle to close out tight games. Mahomes shines in prime-time spots like this NFL Week 3 game at MetLife Stadium, and he’s due for a big performance. It’s hard to picture the Giants handing the Chiefs their first 0-3 start. Look for the Chiefs to pull ahead: Chiefs 27, Giants 16.
