Perth, Oct 19 – India’s cricket team suffered a tough start to their three‑match ODI series against Australia when they lost the opening match by seven wickets. The game was played in Perth, and India finished with 136/9 after both sides had to play only 26 overs due to rain and a revised target.
The loss was a wake‑up call for the Indian camp. Head coach Gautam Gambhir and captain Shubman Gill were seen in a heated discussion with bowling coach Morne Morkel and batting coach Sitanshu Kotak immediately after the final over. Their quick‑fire meeting shows that the team is already gearing up to fix key weaknesses before the next game.
“Losing three wickets in the powerplay set us back,” Gill said. “When that happens, you have to catch up. There are lessons to learn but also things we can build on.” He added, “Defending 130 is tough, but we held on deep into the innings and were proud of that.”
India’s first‑innings collapse began early when top‑order batsmen Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Gill were out for 8, 0 and 10 respectively. The captain’s 10 runs were enough to earn him a silver medal in the home‑world cup’s 12‑th edition of the award.
Kl Rahul scored 38 and Axar Patel made 31 as India came last down. Australia chased the revised target of 131 (DLS‑method) and were 46/0 when captain Mitchell Marsh went off the field after being dismissed. Wicket‑keeper/batter Josh Philippe finished on 37 while Matthew Renshaw stayed unbeaten on 21, with seven wickets still in hand when the match ended in 21.1 overs.
Australia’s win leaves the first ODI in the series as the best result of the three matches. The next outing, the second ODI, will take place in Adelaide on Oct 23. India will look to bounce back quickly, while Australia hopes to seal the series and keep the momentum going.
