Stockholm, Oct 20 – Sweden’s national soccer team has named former West Ham manager Graham Potter as its new head coach. The 50‑year‑old takes the job on a short‑term deal, aiming to boost the team’s chances of reaching the next World Cup.
“I’m humbled and inspired,” Potter said upon his appointment. “Sweden has talented players who perform at the best clubs in the world every week. My role is to create the conditions for the team to deliver at the highest level and bring Sweden to the World Cup next summer.”
The move comes after coach Jon Dahl Tomasson was sacked on Oct 13, following a shocking 1‑0 defeat to Kosovo that left Sweden out of the automatic qualification spots in Group B. Although they miss a direct ticket, Sweden’s strong showing in the 2024‑25 UEFA Nations League—finishing top of their group—still gives them a realistic path to the play‑offs.
Potter arrived in Stockholm after a difficult spell at West Ham. He was dismissed in late September after just six wins in 23 games, and the team sat in the relegation zone with only one triumph in six Premier League matches. Yet the coach remains respected in Sweden. He took Östersund from the fourth tier to the Allsvenskan in four seasons and lifted the club to victory in the Svenska Cupen in 2017.
His coaching résumé also boasts success at Swansea City, Brighton, and a brief stint at Chelsea in 2022. Sweden hopes Potter can bring his experience and optimism back to the national side, leading them to a strong finish in their World Cup qualifying campaign.
