Indian women’s wrestlers made a splash at the Under‑23 World Wrestling Championship in Novi Sad, Serbia, earning two silver medals and five bronze medals that helped India win the overall team title.
Hanshika Lamba (53 kg) and Sarika (59 kg) battled through the brackets to reach the finals. They fell to Japanese opponents in both matches, but their silver medals brought India’s silver‑medal total to two.
The bronze medals were claimed by Nishu (55 kg), Neha Sharma (57 kg), Pulkit (65 kg), Shrishti (68 kg) and Priya (76 kg). Their performances, together with the silver medallists, saw the Indian women’s team amass 125 points, topping the medal table. The United States finished second with 102 points, while Japan took third with 92 points.
Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) President Sanjay Singh said the results were a proud moment and a testament to the hard work of the country’s young athletes.
Meanwhile, Vishvajit More became India’s first medalist of the event when he wrapped up a 5–4 win over a Kazakh wrestler in the Greco‑Roman 55 kg category, earning bronze.
India’s delegation is still strong, with competitors in the men’s freestyle, women’s, and Greco‑Roman events. The men’s freestyle competitions will follow next in the championship schedule.
