In Kolkata, former Indian cricketer and AAP MP Harbhajan Singh kicked off the vibrant Sarbojonin Durgotsav Durga Puja pandal in Ashok Nagar, West Bengal, on September 22. The legendary spinner couldn’t hide his nostalgia for the city and its famous Eden Gardens cricket ground, where he built much of his career.
“Eden made me,” Harbhajan shared, reflecting on his deep ties to the spot.
During his playing days, Harbhajan shone at Eden Gardens in seven Test matches. He grabbed 46 wickets there, including six five-wicket hauls and one incredible ten-wicket match performance. That makes him the top Test wicket-taker at the venue to this day.
Harbhajan also gave shoutouts to his mentor, former Indian captain Sourav Ganguly, who’s rumored to step back in as president of the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB). “Dada is my elder brother,” he said warmly. “He’s the one person who held my hand during tough times. I have so much respect for him… Today, I’m in his city.”
Known for his unforgettable bowling spells at Eden Gardens, Harbhajan thanked Kolkata and its warm-hearted people. “This is my city too because Kolkata made me,” he added.
Wrapping up, he expressed his joy at joining the Durga Puja celebrations. “I want to thank Maa Durga for giving me this chance to be here,” Harbhajan said. “I always get tons of love whenever I visit Kolkata. I pray that Maa Durga blesses everyone, keeping us all happy and healthy.”
