“Have never seen anybody finishing game in five overs”: Kapil Dev on India’s win over UAE in Asia Cup

India’s cricket team kicked off their Asia Cup 2025 campaign with a stunning nine-wicket victory over the UAE in Dubai on Tuesday. Chasing a tiny target of just 58 runs, the Men in Blue made it look like a walk in the park, wrapping up the win in a record-breaking 4.3 overs. Former Indian captain Kapil Dev couldn’t hide his excitement, praising the team’s explosive performance.

The UAE batting lineup crumbled early against India’s sharp bowling attack. Spinner Kuldeep Yadav shone brightest, grabbing 4 wickets for just 7 runs, while all-rounder Shivam Dube chipped in with 3/7. The hosts were bowled out for a measly 57 in 13.1 overs, with only openers Alishan Sharafu (22) and captain Muhammed Waseem (19) managing double figures. This low total set the stage for India’s openers to unleash pure firepower.

Abhishek Sharma and vice-captain Shubman Gill tore into the UAE bowlers from the very first ball. Abhishek wasted no time, smashing a massive six over long-off off Haider Ali’s opening delivery, followed by a slashing four over extra cover. He survived a close caught-and-bowled chance but ended the over with India at 10 without loss.

In the next over, Shubman Gill joined the party, cutting for four and flicking another boundary over deep square leg to push the score to 25/0. Abhishek fired back in the third over against Dhruv Parashar, hitting a back-foot six over long-off and another four, taking India to 38 in just three overs.

Gill added a couple of singles in the fourth, but Abhishek kept the pressure on with a flat six over deep backward square leg. However, he fell for a quick 30 off 16 balls—featuring two fours and three sixes—caught while going for another big shot, leaving India at 48/1 in 3.5 overs.

Suryakumar Yadav walked in and immediately stamped his class, flicking his first ball for a trademark six over fine leg to bring up India’s 50. With just eight runs needed, Gill sealed the deal with a classy four through long-on. India finished at 58/1, with Gill unbeaten on 20 off nine balls (two fours, one six) and Suryakumar on 7 off two (one six).

Speaking to the media after the India vs UAE Asia Cup match, Kapil Dev said, “I like to say good luck to the Indian Cricket Team. The way they played, I have never seen anybody finishing the game in five overs.” His words capture the sheer dominance on display, as Team India sets a strong tone for the tournament.
