BJP MP Arun Govil Defends India-Pakistan Cricket Match Amid Opposition Backlash
In Hapur, BJP MP Arun Govil fired back at critics on Sunday over the Centre’s decision to let India face Pakistan in a cricket match in Dubai. He highlighted how India already taught Pakistan a strong lesson through Operation Sindoor, but stressed that the government’s call on handling ties with the neighbor is key.
Speaking to reporters, Govil said, "We’ve shown Pakistan what we’re capable of with Operation Sindoor. Now, how much further we take this rivalry is up to our government." His comments come hot on the heels of opposition parties slamming the Union government for greenlighting the India-Pakistan cricket clash. They argue that terrorism and cricket can’t mix, especially after recent attacks.
Shiv Sena (UBT) called the match an "insult" to millions of Hindus, mothers, and sisters who lost loved ones in the Pahalgam terror strike—where families’ sindoor (vermilion) was wiped away in grief. Earlier today, Shiv Sena (UBT) workers protested in Hapur, holding sindoor in their hands and urging Indian cricketers to boycott the game.
Govil didn’t hold back. "We respect the opposition’s view, but that doesn’t make it right—it’s not the voice of the nation," he shot back. He also ripped into the opposition for derailing the Monsoon Session of Parliament, where discussions barely happened for two days. "What do you expect from parties that block smooth functioning? They have nothing better to do, so they stir up trouble," Govil added.
The high-stakes India vs Pakistan cricket match is set for Dubai International Cricket Stadium at 6:30 PM UAE time (8:00 PM IST). Fans are buzzing about this Asia Cup showdown, but the political row adds extra tension.
Govil also touched on the changing face of politics, saying it used to be about morals but now feels full of abusive remarks from young leaders and opposition figures. Reflecting on his own path—from playing Lord Ram in the iconic TV show Ramayana to jumping into politics—he shared, "Both worlds have been amazing, and I’ve felt the love in each."
As the debate rages on India-Pakistan relations, cricket, and terrorism, eyes are on how the government balances sports diplomacy with national security.
