Kerala to launch ‘Norka Care’ insurance for non-resident Keralites

Kerala Launches ‘Norka Care’: A Game-Changer for NRKs with Health and Accident Insurance

Imagine getting cashless medical treatment anywhere in India, even if you’re a Non-Resident Keralite (NRK) living far from home. That’s the big promise of ‘Norka Care’, Kerala’s exciting new initiative just for NRKs and their families. In a first for India, this comprehensive health and accident insurance scheme steps up to meet a long-standing demand from the Kerala diaspora.

NORKA Vice Chairman P. Sriramakrishnan shared the good news: Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan will kick off the scheme on September 22 in Thiruvananthapuram. Finance Minister K.N. Balagopal will join the launch event, where they’ll also unveil the handy Norka Care mobile app to make things super easy.

Here’s what makes Norka Care stand out. NRKs with a Norka ID card can sign up right away. The scheme covers cashless treatment at over 16,000 hospitals across India, including more than 500 in Kerala. And get this—they’re working to expand it to hospitals in GCC countries too. Even if you’re a returning expatriate, you can keep your policy going without any breaks.

This idea didn’t come out of nowhere. NRKs have pushed for better health and accident insurance for years, especially through events like the Loka Kerala Sabha. Now, it’s finally here, thanks to the Kerala government’s focus on its global community.

Mark your calendars: Enrollment opens with a global drive from September 22 to October 22. Benefits kick in from November 1—perfect timing for Kerala Piravi Day celebrations.

Norka Roots CEO Ajith Kolassery broke down the perks. You get Rs 5 lakh in health insurance coverage and Rs 10 lakh for accidents. No age limits, no need for medical tests—just straightforward protection for you and your family.

Why does this matter so much? Kerala boasts over 2.5 million NRKs, with nearly 90% in Middle East countries. Since Chief Minister Vijayan took office in 2016, his government has earned praise for supporting the diaspora. Their remittances top one lakh crore rupees yearly, making up about 15% of Kerala’s GDP and keeping millions of families afloat. It’s the economic backbone of the state, and schemes like Norka Care show Kerala values every contribution.

If you’re an NRK or know one, this could be a lifesaver. Stay tuned for more updates on how to enroll and make the most of Norka Care!
