A lawyer from Mavelikkara named Navjeet, who is 30 years old, is accused of brutally attacking his parents in their house in Pullukulangara, a village in Alappuzha district, Kerala, on Sunday night. The 63‑year‑old father, Natarajan, and his 49‑year‑old wife, Sindhu, were both harmed by a knife. Witnesses report that the shouting and fighting drew several neighbours into the home, where they found the couple surrounded by blood and Navjeet seated close by, knife in hand.
Police arrived almost immediately and carried out a risky operation to escort the accused to a police station, as the local community feared a mob might try to take matters into their own hands. On arrival, they found that Natarajan had already died despite being taken to a hospital. Sindhu is still in a critical state, being treated at a private hospital in Mavelikkara. The victims suffered severe injuries; Natarajan had deep lacerations all over his body—including some that severed fingers and damaged his eyes—while Sindhu’s fingers were also badly cut.
Sources say the family was fairly well off and that the father had control over the household and business finances. Neighbours speculate that money disputes and a fight for control, together with Navjeet’s drinking and drug use on the day, may have set the tragic event in motion. The attack also began at a time when Navjeet’s wife, Navya, was preparing for her childbirth admission.
Navjeet has two brothers who practice Ayurveda, but they were not present during the assault. Police are still probing the motives and whether long‑standing family tensions or substance abuse contributed to the violence. Members of the local community have described the incident as one of the most horrific family tragedies they have ever witnessed.
