Perth – Shubman Gill, who has just taken over as India’s One‑Day International (ODI) skipper, talked about leading cricket legends Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli and said he will take their advice whenever he faces a tough spot.
Gill’s appointment follows Rohit’s retirement as Test captain and gives him the chance to guide the side through a three‑match ODI series in Australia. The games will be played in Perth, Adelaide and Sydney, with the opener scheduled for Sunday at Perth Stadium. The second match will be at Adelaide Oval on October 23, and the final ODI will take place at the Sydney Cricket Ground on October 25.
After the ODIs, India will switch to a five‑match Twenty‑20 International (T20I) series. Suryakumar Yadav will lead the squad for the T20Is, which run from October 29 to November 8.
When reporters asked about captaining former leaders Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, Gill said, “They were the players I idolised as a kid. Their hunger and style of play inspired me. It’s a huge honour to be able to lead such legends and learn from them.” He added, “In any difficult situation, I won’t shy away from asking them for advice.”
Gill also explained what he has taken away from playing under Rohit and Kohli. “Their communication style and the messaging they use with the team helped bring out the best in me when I was with them,” he said. “As a captain, I want to create an environment where every player knows exactly what is expected and feels secure in their role.”
The veteran duo – one of the longest‑serving captains in India’s history – announced their retirements from T20Is after India’s World Cup win in Barbados last year. Although their international exposure is ending, Rohit and Kohli will still feature in the ODI series as they help shape India’s plans across the country.
India will not play any more ODIs in Australia until the 2027 World Cup, making these three matches the last chance for Rohit and Kohli to play on Australian soil. The series is expected to highlight both the experience of the veterans and the fresh leadership of Shubman Gill as India looks to build momentum for the coming tournaments.
