Yograj Singh, father of former Indian cricketer and 2011 World Cup winner Yuvraj Singh, has sparked fresh controversy by brushing off cricket legend Kapil Dev. In a recent chat with , Yograj said he doesn’t know Kapil and has no interest in doing so.
This isn’t the first time tensions have boiled over between the two. Back in the 1980s, Yograj got dropped from the Indian team after just one Test match and six ODIs. Months ago, he shocked fans by admitting on a YouTube interview that he once fantasized about taking extreme measures against Kapil Dev for sidelining him. Kapil, staying cool as ever, shrugged it off with a simple question: “Who? Who’s that?”
Yograj doubled down this week, insisting he only respects players like his son Yuvraj Singh, Gautam Gambhir, Rahul Dravid, and Virender Sehwag—folks who keep giving back to Indian cricket. “I don’t want friends, and I don’t need anyone calling me one,” he added. “I’ve wiped that word from my life. It’s all fake anyway.”
But Yograj isn’t just dwelling on the past. He shared a bigger vision for Indian cricket, urging stars to invest in the next generation. “Give to your country and the world—even if it means going hungry yourself to feed others—and doors will open,” he said. He called on every cricketer, not just Kapil Dev, to mentor at least one young talent. “Imagine if that happens. India would produce so many stars that no team could beat us in the years ahead. By God’s grace, we’d dominate everything.”
Shifting to brighter news, Yograj had high praise for India’s rising young guns after their thrilling Asia Cup Super Fours win over Pakistan. Shubman Gill and Abhishek Sharma smashed a 105-run opening partnership, chasing down the target with six wickets to spare and keeping India’s unbeaten streak alive.
“These boys make chasing even 250 look easy,” Yograj told . “But here’s a tip: Shubman and Abhishek, stick around for at least 15 overs. If you do, a 250 target feels like 200, and the rest of the batting can handle anything after that.” He noted Yuvraj has given Abhishek the same advice—play smart and build a solid foundation for those big wins.
