IND vs WI, 2nd Test: Campbell-Hope lead commendable fightback for visitors after follow-on (Day 3, Stumps)

New Delhi – The West Indies staged a spirited fightback in the second Test at Delhi’s Arun Jaitley Stadium, but India still dominated the match. India’s first‑innings total of 518 for 5 set a tough target, forcing West Indies to follow‑on and leaving them trailing by 97 runs after the first day.

West Indies were 173 for two at close‑down, with John Campbell unbeaten on 87 and Shai Hope on 66. Their 248 in the first innings was a lower‑order collapse after India declared at 518-5. The West Indies’ bowlers were unable to break India’s top order, and the two reluctant middle‑order batsmen carried the innings, giving India a huge advantage.

During tea on day 3, the West Indies were 35 for two after 14.3 overs in their second innings. John Campbell and Shai Hope opened a strong partnership, each smashing a six off India’s spinners – Ravi Jadeja and Washington Sundar. In the first 16 overs West Indies crossed the 50‑run mark, with Campbell funneling runs while keeping the scoreboard moving.

Campbell’s aggressive stroke play kept pressure on the bowlers. He found the boundary against each spinner, including a quick 15 off Kuldeep Yadav in the 22nd over. He reached his first series half‑century in just 69 balls, flanked by six fours and two sixes. Hope followed suit, hitting two fours and a six off Sundar and Kuldeep in the next two overs, bringing the partnership to a joint 83 runs.

By the end of the 25th over, the stand had peaked at 100 runs, with both batsmen having 69 runs each – the highest partnership for West Indies in this series. The pair swore on single runs as the innings progressed, adding 79 more runs before the drinks break. Their 83‑run stand for the 4th wicket became West Indies’ best in any wicket in 2025, eclipsing the previous best 68‑run partnership between Gudakesh Motie and Jomel Warrican.

Hope added a three‑wicket century‑stand in 149 balls, reaching 50 in 80 balls, after a sweet flick against Jasprit Bumrah. His six fours and two sixes ended a long wait for a half‑century – his first in Tests since January 2019. The innings saw 150 runs scored by the West Indies in 43.2 overs.

West Indies opened day 4 at 140 for four in their first innings, with Hope still unbeaten on 31 and T A Imlach on 14. However, Kuldeep Yadav struck the wicket of Hope for 36, taking the West Indies to 156 runs in 57 balls. A 49‑run fifth‑wicket stand saw Khary Pierre score 23 and Anderson Phillip add 24 unbeaten, but the Australia bowler’s heavy spell left them all out for 248 in 81.5 overs. Kuldeep finished with 5‑82 and Ravindra Jadeja 3‑46, while India pacers Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj also took wickets.

The first day had seen India take the toss and bat. India built a 58‑run opening partnership between Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul, before Rahul was dismissed by a sharp delivery from Jomel Warrican. Jaiswal went on to score 175 (run‑out after 258 balls) and helped Shubman Gill make a 129* (the fifth century of the year). Gill was part of stand‑ups with Nitish Reddy and Dhruv Jurel. India declared after 518‑5 with key bowlers Jomel Warrican taking 3‑98.

In short, the West Indies showed resilience with Campbell and Hope’s partnership but were ultimately led to a heavy shortfall in the chase. India’s big first‑innings total and strong bowling made this Test a commanding victory for the hosts.
