During a high‑profile trip to Canberra, India’s Defence Minister Rajnath Singh signed a series of new defence agreements with Australia. The deals were signed in front of Australia’s Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister Richard Marles and a small group of senior officials from both sides.
The two leaders met earlier that week at Parliament House, where Marles greeted Singh with a ceremonial welcome that included a traditional “Welcome to Country” smoke‑ceremony, acknowledging Indigenous Australian heritage. The meeting was billed as a win for India‑Australia security ties, with both ministers praising the rapid growth of their defence cooperation and calling the talks “forward‑looking” and “productive.”
Speaking with , Marles described the new arrangements as a major step for the operational partnership between the two armed forces. He said the staff‑talks agreement would deepen trust and bring the two navies and armies into closer operational contact. The message was clear: the link between India’s and Australia’s defence forces is now stronger than ever.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese joined the group later, reinforcing the message that both governments are committed to advancing maritime security and maintaining stability in the Indo‑Pacific. Singh’s visit was part of a broader effort to strengthen strategic and defence collaboration between the two countries, with both sides agreeing to keep the region calm and rules‑based.
