India Looks to Secure Playoff Spot in CAFA Nations Cup 2025 with Key Match Against Afghanistan
India’s men’s football team is gearing up for a crucial showdown in the CAFA Nations Cup 2025. On Thursday, in their final group stage match at the Hisor Central Stadium in Tajikistan, India faces Afghanistan with a place in the tournament’s knockout rounds on the line.
To stay in the race, India must avoid defeat against Afghanistan. A win would almost certainly guarantee their spot in the playoffs, but even a draw could be enough depending on other results. The Blue Tigers are currently tied on points with Tajikistan, but they hold the advantage thanks to a better head-to-head record.
India has played two matches so far—winning against Tajikistan and losing to Iran. Their victory over Tajikistan was their first competitive win since November 2023. Though they suffered a 0-3 loss to Iran, the team remains positive and focused on their next challenge.
Team coach Khalid Jamil emphasized that his players are not thinking about complicated scenarios. “We are not focusing on all those permutations right now. We just want to go into the game looking for a win. That’s as simple as it gets,” he said.
India’s upcoming match is a must-win. They need to beat Afghanistan and also hope Tajikistan doesn’t beat Iran, or else they might miss out. Even if India draws against Afghanistan, they could still qualify if Iran and Tajikistan’s match ends in a draw or Iran wins by a small margin.
Historically, India has the upper hand over Afghanistan, winning 13 times compared to Afghanistan’s two victories. Their last win against Afghanistan came three years ago in the AFC Asian Cup Qualifiers. However, Indian players are aware that past results don’t guarantee this match will be easy.
“Afghanistan is a strong team, and we can’t take them lightly,” coach Jamil warned. “They will play hard, and we need to respond the right way after our last disappointing result.”
India will miss key defender Sandesh Jhingan, who is celebrated for his bravery and leadership. Despite an injury, Jhingan played in the previous match, and his absence will be felt. Coach Jamil praised him highly, saying, “Sandesh is incredibly brave, and his presence motivates the team. We’ll miss him, but it’s an opportunity for others to step up.”
Meanwhile, defender Rahul Bheke is using these matches as valuable experience ahead of upcoming Asian Cup qualifiers. “We’ve shown improvement, and now we have to perform even better in this last group game,” Bheke said. “Getting a positive result is crucial for us.”
India’s journey in the CAFA Nations Cup has been filled with learning and growth. Fans are hopeful that the team will rise to the occasion in this high-stakes match and secure their place in the knockout stage of the tournament. Stay tuned for what promises to be an exciting clash!
