India’s women’s cricket team has suffered a major setback ahead of the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup. Fast bowler Arundhati Reddy had to leave the field in a wheelchair during Thursday’s warm-up match against England in Bengaluru.
The injury happened in a scary moment during Reddy’s follow-through. She had just dismissed England opener Amy Jones and dived for a return catch off Heather Knight’s bat. But Reddy landed awkwardly on her left leg and collapsed in pain. Medical staff rushed to her side, trying to help her stand, but they soon called for a wheelchair to take her off.
Now, questions swirl about whether Reddy can play in the World Cup. The right-arm pacer has impressed since her debut last year, grabbing 15 wickets in 11 ODIs with an average of 32.66. Her best spell? A sharp 4 for 26. Just recently, she shone against Australia, picking up four wickets across two matches—including a haul of three in Delhi. This year alone, she’s claimed seven wickets in six games at an average of 41.85.
Team India kicks off their World Cup campaign against Sri Lanka on September 30 in Guwahati. The side, which reached the final in 2005 and 2017, dreams of winning their first title on home soil. They’re coming off a tough 1-2 series loss to Australia, so they need every player fit.
In the warm-up game, India chose to bowl first after winning the toss. England reached 214 for 3 after 36 overs at the time of this report.
India’s squad includes: Harmanpreet Kaur (captain), Smriti Mandhana (vice-captain), Pratika Rawal, Harleen Deol, Jemimah Rodrigues, Richa Ghosh, Uma Chetry, Renuka Singh Thakur, Deepti Sharma, Sneh Rana, Sree Charani, Radha Yadav, Amanjot Kaur, Arundhati Reddy, and Kranti Gaud. Reserves are Tejal Hasabnis, Prema Rawat, Priya Mishra, Minnu Mani, and Sayali Satghare.
