In the buzzing city of Shillong, India’s senior women’s football team is set to face Nepal on Monday night at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium. The game, part of the Tri‑Nation Women’s International Friendlies, starts at 18:00 IST on October 26 and will be streamed online for free on plus.fifa.com.

Why India is eager to bounce back

Coach Crispin Chettri is using the match as a chance to recover after India’s 0‑2 loss to Iran in the opening friendly. “We didn’t play our best against Iran, but it was a learning experience,” he said at the pre‑match press conference. “Now we’re ready for a different style of opponent and want to show a stronger performance against Nepal.”

Chettri plans to mix the squad with a few young talents to build a roster for the 2026 AFC Women’s Asian Cup. Midfielder Julan Nongmaithem, who captained the U‑17 side to Asian Cup qualification, and defender Heirangkhongjam Linda Chanu join the lineup, along with new goalkeeper Adrija Sarkhel. The forward Manisha Kalyan misses the match because of illness.

“We want consistency and adaptability,” Chettri added. “With Nepal, we’ll keep our core strategy: build from the back, keep possession, and create scoring chances. We’ll also keep an eye on our midfield, control transitions, and reduce mistakes.”

Forward Pyari Xaxa echoed the optimism. “We’re aggressive and eager to play against Nepal. We’ll give our all to win and help the team succeed.”

What Nepali coach Neupane expects

“Nepal will face physical challenges due to travel and a tight schedule, but all our players are fit,” said head coach Nabin Neupane. “We’ve learned from our 0‑3 defeat to Iran, especially for the early second‑half collapse, and have focused on better defensive discipline and sharper finishing.”

Neupane highlighted the need to improve structure, possession, and attacking opportunities. He is confident that Nepal’s players are ready for a tough contest against India.

A rivalry on the rise

India and Nepal share a long‑standing rivalry in South Asian women’s football. This friendly promises a hard‑fought match that serves as valuable preparation for the Blue Tigresses ahead of the AFC Women’s Asian Cup.
