India’s para sports scene is buzzing with excitement as the country hosts a major global event. Andrew Parsons, the re-elected President of the International Paralympic Committee (IPC), highlighted India’s huge potential in para athletics during his visit to New Delhi.
The IndianOil New Delhi 2025 World Para Athletics Championships are underway at the iconic Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium. Parsons called this gathering a true sign of India’s growth and ambitions in para sports. “This is the biggest event outside the Paralympic Games,” he told . It’s his first official trip to India since winning re-election, and he sees it as the perfect way to kick off his next four years leading the IPC.
Joining Parsons at Wednesday’s media briefing was Paul Fitzgerald, head of World Para Athletics. Both leaders shared their thoughts on the championships and India’s rising role in the sport.
Satyanarayana, chief coach of India’s para athletics team, couldn’t be happier about Parsons’ continued leadership. “His re-election is great news for India,” Satyanarayana said. He noted that Parsons has backed Indian para athletes since his days as IPC Vice President.
The Indian team is already shining at the World Para Athletics Championships. With four days still to go, Satyanarayana expects even more success. He’s especially hopeful about the high jump category, where athletes Dharamveer and Pranav Sharma could snag medals. “My athletes are doing well overall,” he added. Thanks to strong support from the government and sports bodies, Indian para athletes enjoy top-notch facilities that help them compete at the highest level.
