Bhubaneswar, Oct 10 – Former top‑ranked Indian table‑tennis star Achanta Sharath Kamal says he’s confident India can step up its medal haul at the Asian Table‑Tennis Team Championships 2025, held this time in the sports‑hotspot Odisha.
The championship runs from Oct 11‑15 and features only men’s and women’s team events. It also doubles as a qualifier for the 2026 ITTF World Team Championships – the top 13 teams in each category will earn a spot.
“It feels great to be back in Odisha,” Kamal told reporters. “We won bronze for both the men’s and women’s teams in the last edition, so this year we’re determined to turn those into silver or gold.”
He highlighted India’s growing global standing: “Our players are in excellent form,” he said. “Manav Thakkar is currently world No. 39 in men’s singles, and our doubles and mixed‑doubles combos rank among the world’s best. With the home crowd behind us and familiar conditions, the team can deliver its best performance yet.”
Kamal praised Odisha’s sports vision. “The organization here is world‑class. This is my first time at this stadium, and the entire complex is outstanding. Odisha can host major global tournaments in many disciplines, and I’m confident the state will be key when India stages future mega events.”
Earlier this year, Kamal announced his retirement after a decorated career that included a flag‑bearing moment at the 2024 Paris Olympics. He has won medals at the Commonwealth Games, Asian Games, and Asian Championships.
India’s table‑tennis community watches eagerly as the 2025 championship approaches, hoping for historic wins and a stronger presence on the world stage.
