India’s junior women’s hockey team wrapped up their Australia tour on a tough note, falling 4-5 to Canberra Chill in a thrilling final match at the National Hockey Centre in Canberra. The young Indians showed plenty of fight, scoring all four of their goals from penalty corners, but couldn’t quite catch up in time.
Sukhveer Kaur gave India an early boost with a penalty corner goal in the sixth minute. But Canberra Chill quickly turned the tide, with Canhess Lauren Yee netting back-to-back field goals in the 12th and 19th minutes to take the lead. The hosts kept the pressure on in the second quarter, as Canhess Josie Lawton scored a field goal in the 24th minute, followed by Hunter Baldwin’s effort just four minutes later. Then, in the third quarter, Amukawton sealed Canberra’s fifth goal from a penalty corner in the 34th minute.
India battled back hard in the second half. Kanika Siwach pulled one back with a penalty corner in the 42nd minute. The final quarter turned into a nail-biter, with Sunelita Toppo firing home from a penalty corner in the 54th minute and Ishika adding another in the 57th. Despite the late rally, the team fell just short of tying the score, ending their tour with this close loss.
It’s worth noting that India had the upper hand in their earlier clash with Canberra Chill at the same venue, winning 3-1. Ishika starred with a brace, scoring from a penalty corner in the 13th minute to level things after Naomi Evans put the hosts ahead via penalty corner in the 11th. Sonam then grabbed a field goal in the 27th minute to make it 2-1 just before halftime. Ishika sealed the victory with her second goal in the 39th minute, and India held firm to claim the win.
