India’s push for a fitter nation gained momentum this weekend as the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports (MYAS) rolled out the 42nd edition of Fit India Sundays on Cycle. The event hit 5,000 locations across the country, with New Delhi stealing the show—over 800 cyclists and fitness fans pedaled through the streets.
In the capital, Aanganwadi worker Suman Chauhan kicked things off at 7 a.m. from Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium. The ride teamed up with the Ministry of Women and Child Development, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, plus Aanganwadi and ASHA workers to boost community health. Local partners like the Raahgiri Foundation helped organize, while Dr. Shikha Gupta led a fun rope-skipping session to mix up the action.
Big names in sports and adventure jumped on board to inspire everyone. Indian women’s hockey captain Salima Tete, midfielder Nikki Pradhan, mountaineer Nisha Kumari, and speed skating gold medalist Krish Sharma all joined the cycling drive.
Salima Tete, fresh off leading the national team, raved about the initiative. “I’m thrilled to be part of Sundays on Cycle—it’s amazing to see people of all ages buzzing with energy for fitness,” she said. She urged folks to carve out 20-30 minutes daily for exercise or cycling at home or outdoors. “The government deserves thanks for this. An active lifestyle is key for the whole country.”
Nikki Pradhan echoed that, highlighting how the Fit India movement has sparked real awareness. “Since the government launched Fit India, more people are focusing on their health. Fitness matters—if we’re not fit, we can’t support others. Skip the junk food whenever you can.”
Krish Sharma, who snagged gold at the Speed Skating World Championships, shared his routine. “Running, cycling, and a protein-packed diet keep me in top shape,” he said. “These are the basics for staying fit every day.”
Nisha Kumari brought her epic story to the event. She summited Mount Everest on May 17, 2023, and once biked from India to London to raise awareness about climate change. “I’ve loved joining Fit India Sundays on Cycle, started by Sports Minister Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya—I even cycled in Gujarat twice,” she said. “Today in New Delhi, the young crowd’s enthusiasm was electric. Everyone should aim for at least 30 minutes of personal fitness daily. It helps fight off illnesses from pollution and bad food.”
MYAS runs Fit India Sundays on Cycle with partners like the Cycling Federation of India (CFI), Yogasana Bharat, and MY Bharat. Events pop up in state capitals, union territories, SAI regional centers, National Centres of Excellence, training centers, and Khelo India spots—welcoming all ages to get moving and promote health through cycling and physical activity.
