Ajaya Babu Valluri, the 20‑year‑old Commonwealth champion from India, pushed 323 kg at the 2025 World Weightlifting Championships on Tuesday and finished 16th in the men’s 79‑kg class. He lifted 146 kg in the snatch and 177 kg in the clean and jerk, a total 12 kg shy of the 335 kg he posted at the Commonwealth championships in Ahmedabad last August.
Valluri’s gold‑medal performance in Ahmedabad earned him a berth at next year’s Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. On the world stage, he started strong, successfully snatching 146 kg on his first attempt. He then tried 150 kg twice but could not clear the weight. In the clean and jerk he lifted 172 kg and then 177 kg before his final attempt at 180 kg failed.
The competition was dominated by Indonesia’s Rizki Juniansyah, who set a new world record with a 204 kg clean and jerk for a total of 361 kg. South Korean lifter Ri Chong‑song won silver with 360 kg, while Egypt’s Mohamed Younes took bronze, also lifting 360 kg but edging out Ri on countback.
Indian athletes also made headlines. On the first day, Mirabai Chanu captured silver in the women’s 48‑kg category with a 199 kg total (84 kg snatch, 115 kg clean and jerk), becoming the only Indian medalist at the event so far. In the 63‑kg class, Nirupama Devi lifted 216 kg (93 kg snatch, 123 kg clean and jerk) and finished ninth out of 35 competitors.
The 2025 World Weightlifting Championships showcased strong performances from athletes worldwide, with India’s Jalani showing promise and the competition leaving many fans eager for the upcoming Commonwealth Games.
