Renuka Singh is all set to spearhead India’s pace attack in the upcoming ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup. The star pacer is making a much-awaited comeback to the national team after recovering from an injury that sidelined her since December 2023.

India women’s head coach Amol Muzumdar shared exciting updates on Renuka’s fitness just before the three-match ODI series against Australia kicks off on September 14. “Renuka has joined the squad and cleared all her fitness tests,” Muzumdar told reporters ahead of the opener. “She’s our key medium-pacer and a vital part of the team. It’s great to have her back after that layoff.”

As India’s strike bowler with the new ball, Renuka boasts an impressive record in ODIs—35 wickets at an average of 22.02 and an economy rate of 4.85. Her return couldn’t come at a better time for the Harmanpreet Kaur-led side, which is using this Australia series to fine-tune combinations ahead of the World Cup.

Muzumdar highlighted why this series matters. “It’s crucial for us to build on our recent successes,” he said. India dominated a tri-series in Sri Lanka in April-May, thrashing the hosts by 97 runs in the final. They followed it up with wins over England in both ODIs (2-1) and T20Is during their June-July tour—a first-ever T20I series victory there.

Reflecting on the England tour, Muzumdar praised the team’s unity. “It was a solid 40-day trip where everyone chipped in. Smriti Mandhana’s century at Trent Bridge set the tone, and Harmanpreet Kaur’s hundred at Durham sealed it. Kranti Goud grabbed six wickets, Radha Yadav shone in both formats, and Deepti Sharma contributed with bat and ball.”

For the Australia challenge, India is focusing on smart strategies. “Australia has ruled women’s cricket for years, but we stick to our game plan—preparing well, executing strategies, and staying focused internally,” Muzumdar added. “We’re excited to take on one of the world’s top teams.”

The ODI series runs from September 14 to 19, giving India valuable match practice. They’ll launch their World Cup campaign against co-hosts Sri Lanka in Guwahati on September 30. Fans are buzzing about Renuka’s return and India’s strong form heading into the big tournament.
