The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) is celebrating a major win as the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has decided to fully restore its partnership through the Olympic Solidarity Programmes. This is a big step forward for Indian sports and athletes across the country.
The IOC praised India’s recent efforts to improve sports governance and support athletes at every level — from grassroots players to Olympic hopefuls. In a letter to the IOA president, the IOC highlighted two key achievements: the appointment of Raghuram Iyer as IOA’s new CEO and the Indian government’s approval of the National Sports Governance Act. Both moves are seen as crucial for building a stronger sports system in India.
Thanks to the reinstatement of the Olympic Solidarity programmes, Indian athletes will now receive more direct funding and development support. This support will help athletes with training, preparation, and participation in the Olympics and other major international sports events.
IOA chief P.T. Usha called this a historic moment for Indian sports. She said, “This shows our strong commitment to working with the Indian government under the new sports laws. We’re building a bright future for India’s athletes.” Usha also expressed gratitude to the IOC for its trust and continued support, emphasizing how this partnership will boost Indian athletes’ Olympic dreams.
Previously, due to disputes within the Indian Olympic body, the IOC had stopped all payments to the IOA. The recent progress marks a positive change, helping Indian sport move forward more confidently on the international stage.
