Rohan Bopanna, the Indian tennis star who has won two Grand Slam titles, said on Saturday that he is ending his professional career. The 45‑year‑old retired after a match at the Paris Masters, when he and partner Alexander Bublik lost in the Round of 32.
Bopanna’s career spanned 20 years, during which he became a household name in India. He first made headlines with the French Open mixed‑doubles title in 2017, partnering Gabriela Dabrowski. In 2024 he captured the Australian Open men’s‑doubles crown, becoming world No. 1 at the age of 43 – a rare achievement for a veteran player.
His post‑retirement message was heartfelt. He thanked his parents, sister, wife Supriya, and daughter Tridha for their support. Bopanna also praised his long‑time coach Scott and thanked teammates, trainers, and fans who stood by him. He said the sport has given him “purpose, strength, and belief.”
Bopanna has reached five Grand Slam finals overall: one men’s‑doubles final with Matthew Ebden at the 2023 US Open, and four mixed‑doubles finals – 2017 French Open, 2018 Australian Open, and 2023 Australian Open with Sania Mirza. His record shows consistent performance across top tournaments.
He also served India in Davis Cup and Olympic competitions, proudly carrying the tricolor on every match he played. Bopanna said he will remain involved in tennis, inspiring young players from small towns to chase their dreams.
