New Delhi, November 30 (LatestNewsX) – Former India cricketer Atul Wassan believes the Indian batsmen tackled South Africa with a determined mindset, eager to redress their recent Test series loss. India set a 350‑run target in their first innings, powered by a century from Virat Kohli and half‑centuries from Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul.
In an exclusive interview with LatestNewsX about India’s game plan, Wassan said the side must play well because all the players are highly ranked. He noted that the Men in Blue were “frustrated” after the Test defeat and wanted to channel that frustration into the ODIs, which they did as a unit.
“They have to play good innings; they’re good players, and they’ll have to play well.” Wassan commented, pointing out that the current ODI format follows a fixed template. “If we keep dissecting every single player’s innings, we’ll just run out of things to say,” he added. Referring to Virat, he remarked, “Since he’s scored a hundred and the team’s recently lost Tests to South Africa, it feels like an embarrassed cat scratching a pole – a situation like the proverb.” He went on to say that India was frustrated and wanted to “take it out on them completely,” and the whole group performed well with the bat.
The 57‑year‑old praised South Africa’s intentions and argued that the team can no longer be called ‘chokers’ as it once was. He also lauded Temba Bavuma, noting that the wicket‑keeper has infused confidence in the squad, helping them shine on the big stage.
“South Africa are no longer a choker. Though they may not have the big‑name players they once did, they believe they can win,” Wassan observed. “Their captain is a special player who has instilled belief and taught them how to win. Everyone is talented, but building a winning habit is a very tough thing to achieve,” he added.
