Things heated up during the 2025 Women’s ODI World Cup opener between Pakistan and Bangladesh in Colombo when former Pakistan captain Sana Mir sparked a social media storm. While commentating on the match Thursday, Sana referred to Pakistan batter Natalia Pervaiz as coming from “Kashmir,” then specified “Azad Kashmir.” The comment quickly drew backlash online, with many accusing it of touching on sensitive political issues.
Sana wasted no time responding on her X account, clarifying that she meant no harm. “I have no malice in my heart and didn’t intend to hurt anyone’s feelings,” she wrote. She explained that her words were just part of storytelling in cricket commentary—highlighting the tough journey of players from different regions. “It’s unfortunate how this got blown out of proportion,” Sana added. “Sports folks shouldn’t face this kind of pressure. I did the same for two other players from other parts of Pakistan today.”
To back her point, Sana shared a screenshot from ESPNCricinfo’s player profile, which originally listed Natalia’s hometown as Azad Kashmir. The site has since updated it to “Pakistan-administered Kashmir” amid the uproar. “This is where I get my info on players from Pakistan and elsewhere,” Sana noted. “Please don’t politicize it. As a World Feed commentator, my job is to focus on the game, the teams, and inspiring stories of grit and perseverance.”
On the field, Bangladesh handed Pakistan a seven-wicket loss at R Premadasa Stadium in their Women’s ODI World Cup 2025 debut. Pakistan struggled with the bat and couldn’t defend their total. Now, the team looks ahead to a big rivalry clash against hosts India on Sunday at the same venue. Fans are already buzzing about what could be another thrilling matchup in this global cricket showdown.
