Jalaj Saxena bids farewell to Kerala after nine seasons

Jalaj Saxena, the experienced all-rounder who’s been a key player for Kerala cricket, has announced he’s leaving the team after nine solid seasons. This marks the end of a memorable chapter for both him and the state side, where he shone as a consistent performer and leader.

Saxena kicked off his domestic cricket journey with Madhya Pradesh back in the 2005-06 season. But he switched to Kerala before the 2016-17 season and stayed loyal, playing 125 matches across all formats right up to the 2024-25 season. Fans and teammates will miss his all-round skills on the field.

He shared the emotional news on Instagram, opening up about his feelings. “It’s never easy to put my feelings into words, but today I want to share something close to my heart,” he wrote. “I have played my last game in Kerala colours, and that thought still feels surreal. Saying this brings a strange mix of emotions – gratitude, pride and a little ache. Over the years, this team has given me more than just cricket. It gave me brothers, friends and a family that stood by me through every high and low.”

For nearly a decade, Saxena served as Kerala’s backbone in domestic cricket. He racked up 3,153 runs and grabbed 352 wickets across formats. In first-class matches for Kerala, he scored 2,252 runs in 58 games, including three centuries, and took 269 wickets at an average of 20.68. That’s impressive, with 23 five-wicket hauls to his name. His 269 wickets rank second in Kerala’s first-class history, just behind KN Ananthapadmanabhan’s 310.

The 2024-25 Ranji Trophy season stood out as a highlight for Saxena and Kerala. The team made a strong run to the final but lost to Vidarbha. During this campaign, Saxena made history by becoming the first player in Ranji Trophy to hit the double milestone of 6,000 runs and 400 wickets. What a feat for the Kerala cricketer!

Looking back, Saxena reflected on his dedication. “I’ve given blood, sweat, and tears – everything I had – for this journey, and in return, it gave me memories and bonds that will last a lifetime,” he said. He also thanked his teammates, the Kerala Cricket Association (KCA), coaches, support staff, and even the groundsmen. “To each and every teammate – thank you for making the dressing room a place of laughter, learning, and unforgettable memories. To the KCA, coaches, support staff, and the unsung heroes – the groundsmen who work tirelessly so we can have our game – my deepest respect and gratitude. None of this journey would have been possible without your support.”

Saxena’s overall first-class stats are outstanding: 7,060 runs and 484 wickets, with 34 five-wicket hauls. Even after almost two decades of top-notch domestic cricket performance, a spot in the Indian national team has remained out of reach. It’s a reminder of how tough it can be in the competitive world of Indian cricket.

He didn’t reveal his next move or which team he’ll join, but Saxena made it clear this isn’t goodbye to cricket. “Cricket has taught me that every ending is just a new beginning,” he added. “My heart will always beat for Kerala, and I’ll always carry these memories with me wherever I go.” Fans of Ranji Trophy and Kerala cricket are eager to see what comes next for this veteran all-rounder.
