Manchester—Dec 12 (LatestNewsX) – Lancashire Cricket announced on Friday that former England star James Anderson will take over as the club’s full‑time County Championship captain for the 2026 campaign.
After signing a one‑year extension with the Red Rose in November, Anderson, who had been filling in during the 2025 season, will now become the permanent red‑ball skipper. The 43‑year‑old, England’s all‑time leading wicket‑taker, hung up his international gloves last year following a debut for Lancashire back in 2002 and a loyal domestic spell with the Red Rose.
“I’m grateful for the chance to lead Lancashire full‑time as we step into the new season,” Anderson said. “I appreciated having the opportunity to captain the side last year and it’s an honour to return on a permanent basis. The squad is a wonderful mix of young talent and experienced campaigners. We’re all excited to push for promotion back to Division One, which remains our top priority.”
Anderson recently surpassed 300 appearances in first‑class cricket and will head into 2026 aiming to lift his wicket tally from 1,143 in the same format.
Josh Bohannon, appointed vice‑captain in 2024, will keep that role. Keaton Jennings will continue to lead the team in the Vitality Blast.

His experience in cricket is second to none, and the way he stepped into the captaincy during the second half of last season showed exactly why he’s the right person for the job. With Jimmy as captain and Josh continuing as vice‑captain, we have a strong, stable leadership team that will drive our ambitions in the County Championship next season.”
