Richa Ghosh, the 22‑year‑old wicket‑keeper‑batter who helped India lift the ODI World Cup, received one of West Bengal’s top civilian titles, the Banga Bhushan, on Saturday at Eden Gardens. The Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) hosted a small ceremony to celebrate her stellar performance in the World Cup squad.
Former India bowler Jhulan Goswami was among the guests, standing beside cricket legend Sourav Ganguly. After the award, Jhulan posted on her own social media, thanking everyone for being there and congratulating Ghosh. “Richa’s journey shows the determination and spirit that define Bengal’s daughters,” she wrote. “So proud to see her talent recognized, and even prouder to see her inspire the next generation.”
During the event, Ghosh received a bouquet, a memento, and a cheque worth Rs. 34 lakh from the CAB. The West Bengal chief minister, Mamata Banerjee, handed her a golden bat and ball in a gesture of honour. Banerjee later shared a video on X, noting that the award marked a “special moment” and announcing Ghosh’s appointment as Deputy Superintendent of Police.
The ceremony highlighted the state’s pride in its athletes and promised more Bengal girls to shine on national and international stages. The event, held in the historic Eden Gardens, also underscored the growing recognition of women’s cricket in India.
