In New Delhi, a stray dog caused quite a stir at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium during the ongoing World Para Athletics Championships 2025. The dog bit a Kenyan official, prompting quick action from organizers and city authorities to handle stray dogs in Delhi and keep the venue safe.
Stadium officials immediately notified the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD). In response, MCD sent two dog-catching teams to the site. They rounded up all the stray dogs on the premises and moved them to shelter homes for proper care and rehabilitation, while following animal welfare guidelines.
To top it off, crews sanitized the affected areas with help from local agencies. This ensured the stadium stays safe, clean, and ready for athletes and spectators. Sources say the situation is now fully under control, with extra preventive steps in place to stop any similar incidents with stray dogs at events.
This isn’t the first time stray dogs have been an issue at the stadium. Back in August, organizers asked MCD to clear out the strays from Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium. MCD acted on that request and removed dogs at the time.
The problem gained national attention when India’s Supreme Court stepped in on August 22. The court ordered civic bodies in Delhi-NCR to capture stray dogs right away and relocate them to shelters. The move addressed growing worries about public safety and the spread of rabies.
But the court later tweaked its order from August 11, making it clear that healthy stray dogs should get sterilized and vaccinated before release. Only those with rabies or aggressive behavior would stay in shelters permanently.
With the championships continuing smoothly, organizers are focused on keeping everyone safe amid Delhi’s ongoing efforts to manage its stray dog population.
