New Delhi – At the World Para Athletics Championships, German sprinter Max Maximilian brought more than a gold medal to India. The 29‑year‑old hero of the men’s 400 m T47 event won his race wearing a white headband printed with the Hindi phrase Kabhi Haar Mat Mano – “Never Give Up”. On top of the band, a lotus flower added a touch of Buddhist symbolism, representing purity and resilience.
The gesture was Max’s way of saying thanks to the country that cradled his comeback after a long struggle with knee pain. “Athletes feel a warm welcome here,” he told reporters. “Putting Hindi words on my forehead was a simple act of respect.” He added that the idea came from his coach Steffi Nerius, who had taught him and fellow German long jumper Markus Rehm to wear host‑country words as a mark of courtesy.
The headband did more than look good. Max said the words boosted his mindset during the final meter of the race. Facing Japan’s Ryota Fukunaga and Botswana’s Bose Mokgwathi, he slipped behind but the “never give up” mantra spurred him on. Max burst past the pack, winning by just 0.30 seconds and taking the gold home.
When asked about the moment, Max was visibly emotional. “It’s not only about the medal,” he confessed. “It’s about connecting with the culture of the host country and showing respect.” He praised India for its hospitality and said he will always remember the supportive spirit that helped him secure the victory.
Max’s headband has become a talking point, a symbol of sportsmanship and gratitude that underscores the importance of respect in competition. And for Max Maximilian, it signifies that perseverance can lead to triumph even after a difficult recovery.
