Indian missions worldwide mark Gandhi Jayanti with tributes, hymns and Swachhata drives

Indian embassies and missions around the world marked Mahatma Gandhi’s 156th birth anniversary on October 2 with heartfelt tributes to his timeless ideals of peace and non-violence. Gandhi Jayanti, which doubles as the International Day of Non-Violence, highlights the leader’s dedication to truth, ethical living, and social justice—messages that still inspire people everywhere today.

In New Zealand, the Indian High Commission hosted a special event where guests gathered to discuss how Gandhi’s teachings apply to modern life. High Commissioner Neeta Bhushan greeted attendees, including notable figures of Indian origin like former Governor-General Anand Satyanand and MP Paramjeet Parmar, along with community leaders and New Zealand friends.

Over in Japan, Charge d’Affaires R. Madhu Sudan led Team India, local Edogawa City officials, the Indian diaspora, teachers, and students in laying flowers at the Gandhi statue in Edogawa. The group honored his enduring call for peace and non-violence on this special day.

In Nepal, Indian Ambassador Naveen Srivastava used the occasion to thank the embassy’s sanitation workers for their hard work on the ‘Swachhata Hi Seva 2025’ cleanliness drive. At the Indian Embassy in Kathmandu, Ambassador Srivastava and staff offered floral tributes, while students and teachers from Kendriya Vidyalaya sang Gandhi’s favorite hymns to celebrate his principles.

Papua New Guinea joined the festivities too. At the University of Papua New Guinea in Port Moresby, Indian High Commissioner Rajeev Kumar, Vice Chancellor Ian Findlay, and faculty members paid respects to Mahatma Gandhi, reflecting on his global impact.

Australia saw lively celebrations in multiple cities. In Sydney, Consul General S. Janakiraman placed flowers at Gandhi’s statue in Jubilee Park, Parramatta. He was joined by Indian-origin Labour Councillor Sameer Pandey and members of the local Indian community to pay homage to the Father of the Nation.

Down in Perth, Consul General Naresh Kumar took part in an event by Ahimsa Australia, spreading Gandhi’s message of ‘Ahimsa’ (non-violence) and the lasting truth of his philosophy.

Finally, in Brazil’s Sao Paulo, Consul General Hansraj Singh Verma and consulate staff kicked off Gandhi Jayanti with a cleanliness drive at the Mahatma Gandhi statue in Praca Tulio Fontoura, Paraiso. This tied into the Swachhata Hi Seva 2025 campaign, paying tribute to Gandhi’s dream of a Clean India and Green India while encouraging everyone to build a healthier, sustainable world.
