SC dismisses Cong legislator’s plea for Vigilance probe in CMRL, Kerala CM daughter’s IT firm

The Supreme Court on Monday stopped a petition from Congress MP Mathew Kuzhalnadan that asked for a new vigilance probe into monthly payments that a Kochi‑based miner, Cochin Minerals and Rutile Ltd (CMRL), allegedly sent to Exalogic Solutions – an IT company that closed after Kerala’s chief minister’s daughter was linked to it.
In a 2‑judge bench headed by Chief Justice B.R. Gavai and Justice Vinod Chandran, the court said the case should not be used as a political quarrel. “Political disputes should be settled outside the courtroom,” the chief justice said. Justice Chandran agreed and added that while Kuzhalnadan is respected for disaster‑relief work, his activism should not extend into every area.
Kuzhalnadan had already taken the matter to the Kerala High Court and to the Thiruvananthapuram Vigilance Court, both of which turned down his request for an investigation. The Supreme Court’s refusal means he will have to continue his fight through other legal channels.
The MP said he had lost the case on technical grounds but plans to keep pressuring the state and the courts over the monthly payment allegations. He argues the payments suggest a conflict of interest between CMRL and the chief minister’s family. State officials and supporters of the ruling Left Democratic Front say the claims are merely “politicised” attacks.
Meanwhile, the Delhi High Court will hear arguments about the Serious Fraud Investigation Office’s probe into the same issue on October 28 and 29.
The decision comes amid heated politics in Kerala, where the Congress‑led United Democratic Front wants more transparency on the Exalogic deal, while the ruling party calls all accusations a smear campaign.
