KIUG 2025: From losing her father at 9 to securing 100m gold, Keerthana’s journey to the top

Jaipur, Dec 2 ( LatestNewsX ) ― Every athlete eventually hits a defining moment, and for Keerthana it unfolded in Jaipur. The Udupi‑born sprinter ran 11.94 seconds to capture the women’s 100 m title at the Khelo India University Games Rajasthan 2025, a victory that felt like the culmination of years of hard work.

Now a second‑year Master of Commerce student at Jain University, she made history by walking home with the institution’s first gold medal earned outside of swimming. Her presence on the track has already earned her a reputation as a promising new talent. Yet the glittering finish masks a backstory of loss and relentless determination.

Keerthana’s journey began in third grade, when she was nine, after her father’s sudden heart attack broke the family’s world. A few years later she lost her coach in an accident, which could have sent her reeling. At that point she was a 400 m runner battling a groin injury that threatened to derail her ambitions. That setback turned into a turning point.

Her older brother, a private physical‑training instructor and the family’s main provider, stepped in when she needed guidance most. He took over her coaching in 2021, suggesting she shift to the 100 m to tap her raw speed while allowing her body to heal. From then on, the pair trained in secrecy, slowly rebuilding confidence and rhythm.

Keerthana didn’t stall. Over the following two years she sharpened her 100 m form, improving her speed and self‑belief. Her breakthrough came in 2022, when she helped her university win silver in the 4×400 m relay at the Khelo India University Games in Bengaluru. That season she also took gold in the relay at the All India Inter‑University Games, then silver the following year in Chennai.

By March 2023 her progress was tangible; she ran a personal best of 11.86 seconds at a U‑23 state meet. She arrived in Jaipur hoping to surpass that time.

The upward trajectory continued, and the gold earned Monday in the Pink City stands out as a milestone: it’s her first solo medal at a KIUG after having already earned relay medals in the previous two editions.

“I wanted to beat my personal best, but I couldn’t. Still, the victory at the Khelo India University Games matters because it’s my first individual gold,” 22‑year‑old Keerthana said, her smile mixing pride with a hint of disappointment over missing 11.86 s.

A medal‑winning athlete since the 2017 School Games, Keerthana recognises that her story is far from finished. She remains in Jaipur to compete in the final relay day of KIUG 2025, hoping to add another medal to her growing tally.

“We’ve prepared well for the relay, and we’re eager to win another gold,” she added with quiet confidence.

As the season winds down, Keerthana is already planning a packed 2026, yet injury avoidance remains her top priority—a lesson learned early in her career. With the Asian Games on the horizon, she is focused on giving herself the best chance.
