FC Barcelona powered their way to second place in La Liga with a convincing 3-0 victory over Getafe at home on Sunday. Playing their second match in a week at the intimate Johan Cruyff Stadium, Hansi Flick’s team controlled the game from start to finish. Ferran Torres grabbed two goals, both set up by Marcus Rashford and Dani Olmo, before Olmo sealed the win with a strike in the 62nd minute from another Rashford assist. Getafe struggled with just 28% possession and barely created chances.
The result puts more pressure on Atletico Madrid in the title race. They played out a frustrating 1-1 draw away at Mallorca, leaving them nine points behind leaders Real Madrid and seven adrift of Barcelona. Mallorca’s keeper Leo Roman shone, saving a Julian Alvarez penalty and making crucial stops. Conor Gallagher finally put Atletico ahead in the 79th minute, but after Alexander Sorloth’s red card left them with 10 men, Vedat Muriqi equalized six minutes from the end.
In other La Liga action on Sunday, Rayo Vallecano and Celta Vigo shared the points in a 1-1 draw. Borja Iglesias put Celta in front, but Jorge de Frutos leveled things up for Rayo. Elche kept their impressive form since promotion alive with a 1-0 win over Real Oviedo, thanks to Andre Silva’s goal that boosted them to fifth in the La Liga standings.
Saturday brought more excitement, as Real Madrid stayed perfect with five wins from five matches. They beat Espanyol 2-0 at home, with Eder Militao blasting in a long-range opener and Kylian Mbappe doubling the lead early in the second half.
Osasuna took the lead at Villarreal through Ante Budimir’s penalty, even after Valentin Rosier’s red card in the 39th minute reduced them to 10. Georges Mikautadze pulled Villarreal level, and they snatched a late winner via a deflection off Pape Gueye.
Athletic Bilbao’s trip to Valencia turned sour with a red card to Dani Vivian in the 60th minute, paving the way for a home win. Baptiste Santamaria and Hugo Duro scored to give Valencia the points.
Sevilla edged Alaves 2-1 on the road, with Ruben Vargas and Alexis Sanchez finding the net. Levante, meanwhile, romped to a 4-0 triumph at Girona after the hosts saw Axel Witsel and Victor Reis sent off. Etta Eyong, Carlos Alvarez, Ivan Romero, and Koyalipou all scored for the visitors.
Friday’s highlight saw Betis cruise to a 3-1 home win over Real Sociedad. Cucho Hernandez, Pablo Fornals, and an Alex Remiro own goal did the damage for Betis in this key La Liga matchup.
