Spanish football is adding a new chapter in the United States, and the governing body’s chief says it’s a gift for fans.
Luis Rubiales, president of the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF), told reporters that hosting a LaLiga match in Los Angeles will reward supporters who travel for the game and help grow the sport overseas. “We want fans to be the focus, and giving them the chance to see their teams live in the US is the best way to do that,” Rubiales said.
The match – between Atletico Madrid and Barcelona – will take place on September 27 at the new McConnell Gym in California. The RFEF said it chose the city because of the huge Spanish‑speaking crowd in Southern California and the growing interest in European soccer across North America.
Fans in the U.S. have long asked for more opportunities to watch top‑tier Spanish football. The game will be broadcast by Univision and ESPN, giving millions of viewers time‑zone‑friendly coverage. Tickets are already sold out in many cities, and the night before the match, both clubs are hosting fan‑meet‑and‑greets at local soccer clubs.
“We’ve worked hard to build a bridge between Spanish football and American supporters,” Rubiales added. “Every ticket sold is a gift to the fans who believe in the sport.”
The LaLiga match in the United States also marks a strategic move by the league, which plans to increase its footprint in the U.S. market. By bringing big clubs to American stadiums, LaLiga hopes to attract new sponsors, expand its fan base, and set the stage for future competitions in the region.
Spanish players who tour the U.S. will also participate in community events, including youth coaching clinics and street soccer sessions, further solidifying the relationship between the clubs and local fans.
Even fans who can’t make it to the stadium will feel the excitement through social media. Real-time stats, behind‑the‑scenes footage, and live commentary will keep followers in the loop, ensuring the Spanish game remains accessible to a global audience.
With this move, the RFEF president has confirmed that a LaLiga match in the United States is more than just a friendly game. It’s a clear reward for fans worldwide and a bold step toward making Spanish football a global spectacle.
