The news coming from Karur is deeply worrying: Union Minister L Murugan

Tamil Nadu’s political leaders are reeling from a tragic stampede at a rally in Karur that claimed 39 lives. The incident happened Saturday evening during an event for Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), led by popular actor Vijay. It’s the deadliest crowd disaster tied to a political gathering in the state’s history, leaving officials shocked and vowing swift action.

Union Minister L Murugan called the Karur stampede news “deeply worrying” on Sunday. He told reporters he’s been coordinating with the local District Collector and directed BJP leaders to offer every bit of support to the affected families. “We must stand with them during this tough time,” Murugan said.

Chief Minister MK Stalin echoed the grief, visiting the Government Medical College and Hospital in Karur late Saturday night. He met injured victims and families of those who died, paying heartfelt tributes. Flying in from Chennai and driving to the site, Stalin described the stampede as a “horrific accident” that hit him hard. “I’m standing here with deep sorrow—I can’t even put it into words,” he shared with reporters.

Stalin confirmed 39 people lost their lives in the Karur rally tragedy. Another 51 remain in intensive care, fighting for recovery. To support the victims, the state government announced Rs 10 lakh compensation for each family of the deceased and Rs 1 lakh for the injured. “With a heavy heart, I pay homage to those we’ve lost,” Stalin said. He stressed that such a Tamil Nadu rally stampede should never happen again.

Holding back on any political blame, Stalin ordered a full probe. An inquiry commission, headed by a retired High Court judge, will dig into what went wrong at the TVK event. “The truth will come out, and we’ll take strict action once it’s clear,” he promised. Officials acted fast: As soon as word reached Stalin in Chennai around 7:45 p.m., he sent former Minister Senthil Balaji to check on hospitals and nearby ministers to rush to Karur.

The Karur stampede has sparked widespread calls for better crowd safety at political rallies across India. Families continue to mourn, while leaders focus on healing and preventing future disasters.
